People navigate the world differently. Some read a screen, some listen for a cue, some need both, some need neither but appreciate the reassurance. Designing on-board information systems around that reality does not require a separate solution for separate people⦠It requires building one system that is good enough for everyone from the start. Automated on-board announcements, delivered through both audio and visual displays using live data, are a clear example of what this looks like in practice. When every passenger knows where they are, is certain what is coming next, and has the information they need to travel confidently, that shifts from a special feature for a particular use case to true universal design in public transport.
Modern text-to-speech engines have moved well beyond the robotic phone menu voice, and the same content powering on-board announcements and station PA announcements can flow through to apps, hearing loops, and other channels without rebuilding from scratch. New Zealand already has working examples to draw from, and the technology is within reach for agencies of any size. Looking ahead, as voice interfaces become more embedded in everyday life and real-time transit data standards continue to mature, the feeds behind these systems could be accessed and combined in ways that extend their reach even further. This session explores the practical path to building information systems where every passenger, regardless of how they experience the world, travels with the same dignity, confidence, and self-agency.
